Chadian president, Darfur rebels meet in Paris
The President of Chad, Idris Deby, met with the Chairman of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), Jibril Ibrahim, in Paris on Saturday to discuss peace in Darfur. The Chairman of the JEM chairman told Sudan Tribune after the meeting that he repeated the demand of the rebel alliance Sudan Revolutionary Front (SRF) for an inclusive process aimed at achieving a comprehensive solution to the various armed conflicts in the country. “We said it is not a matter of tribe or a region but the whole of Sudan. We do not want partial agreements, but a solution negotiated with all the SRF members to achieve a genuine peace and democratic change in Sudan,” Ibrahim said. The meeting was the first official contact between the two Zaghawa leaders since 2010, when Chad and Sudan signed an agreement ending tensions between the two neighbouring countries and providing to stop support to rebel groups from both sides. According to the JEM Chairman, Deby intended to brief him and Minni Minawi, the leader of the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM-MM), who is also a Zaghawa, on the outcome of the second Um Jaras Forum, and pledged to report the responses of the rebel leaders to Darfur tribal leaders, who had commissioned him to hold the meeting. It was reported that Minawi will meet with the President Deby separately. However, the rebel leader denied on Monday that he met Deby to discuss ways to achieve peace in Darfur. “I just arrived to Paris after his meeting with Jibril Ibrahim”, Minawi told Sudan Tribune a few hours after his arrival in the French capital.
