Cautious calm in North Darfur’s El Sareif after tribal clashes
El Sareif Beni Hussein locality in North Darfur is witnessing a cautious calm after a series of clashes last week between Abbala and Beni Hussein tribesmen. Fighting on Thursday claimed the lives of 34 people. In a statement on Sunday, El Sareif Youth League criticised the absence of the authorities during the clashes, and demanded the deployment of buffer forces between the two tribes. “The militants who instigated the conflict should be brought to justice.” El Sadeg Daoud, the spokesman for El Sareif Youth League told Radio Dabanga that the youth of El Sareif demanded from the North Darfur State government to immediately intervene, shoulder its responsibility towards the citizens in the locality, and impose the rule of law. The chairman of the League’s eastern sector, Ahmed Idris Abdel Banat, confirmed that the hostilities ceased. “The commissioner of El Sareif Beni Hussein locality, Lt. Col. El Hadi, has assumed his responsibilities, and contacted various prominent tribesmen to calm down the tensions.” The fighting between the Abbala Rizeigat and Beni Hussein started on Monday, after a group of militant Abbala attacked farmers of the Beni Hussein tribe, east of El Sareif town.
