Border guards kidnap displaced, raid South Darfur camp

A force from the border guards kidnapped three butchers from a camp for the displaced east of Nyala, South Darfur, beat camp residents and searched houses on Thursday. One of the sheikhs of camp Dereig told Radio Dabanga that a force of border guards led by a captain raided the camp during the afternoon, in a Land Cruiser mounted with a Dushka machinegun and on camels, horses and donkeys. They started beating and whipping the camp residents, and moving from house to house in search of four cows which they claimed have been stolen from them.  Then they kidnapped three butchers from the market and took them to an unknown destination. The border guards have confiscated all meat and animal skins in the market.  The sheikh reported that a force of Unamid in five vehicles tried to intervene, however, it withdrew as soon as the border guards fired shots in their direction and into the air. After the captain of the border guards threatened to burn the camp if the four cows were not recovered, the Unamid force returned to its headquarters.File photo Related: Abu Tira abduct Chadian refugees in Central Darfur (15 January 2014)
