AU delegation visits Zamzam camp in North Darfur
A delegation from the African Union (AU) visited the Zamzam camp for the displaced in North Darfur on Wednesday. “They held a lengthy meeting with the leaders of the displaced living in the Zamzam camp on Wednesday,” a camp sheikh reported to Radio Dabanga. The delegation included representatives in the fields of human rights, security, politics, and humanitarian aid. They asked the camp leaders about the progress of the implementation of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur on the ground, and about the security situation. The sheikh said that the camp leaders emphasised to the delegation that “there exists no Doha Document on the ground. The situation now has returned to the high level of insecurity we witnessed during the start of the war, in the years 2003-2004.” “We pointed to the recent deterioration of the security in South and North Darfur, and the requirements for safety and stability. A just and comprehensive peace needs to be achieved, which can only be done by unifying the negotiating platforms of Darfur, South Kordofan, and the Blue Nile. We also told them that we are in urgent need of job opportunities for young Darfuris.” The sheikh concluded by saying that the AU representatives told them they had come to collect information. Their findings will be delivered to AU senior authorities.
