Army troops’ abuses continue in South Darfur’s El Salam camp

Army troops have beaten and looted a shop owner in camp El Salam near Nyala, capital of South Darfur. The people living in the camp have complained of this and other abuses by Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) troops stationed at compounds nearby the camp. Sheikh of El Salam camp Mahjoub Adam Tabaldiya told Radio Dabanga that about six army troops from Jebel Kishlingo, located 1.5km south of the camp, beat Mohamedein Hamid Hassan. They broke into his cigarettes store, and stole SDG470 ($82), his mobile phone and two packs of cigarettes. Tabaldiya has denounced the soldiers’ violations and abuses, and the breach of the agreements between camp sheikhs and the leadership of the army garrison. “The commander of the Jebel Kishlingo garrison and the authorities must protect us from violations and military campaigns in the area.” On Thursday, the SAF limited all movement into and out of El Salam camp, following a clash between army troops and militiamen on January 10th. At least six people were killed during these fights. A number of camp residents has been injured in attacks by elements of the army on the market on Tuesday. One of the leaders of the camp told Radio Dabanga on Thursday that the displaced people are living “in a severe state of panic and horror” because of violations committed by pro-government militiamen, and now also by Sudanese army troops.
