Shooting takes place in Hamidiya camp; camp coordinator accuses LJM and government-backed forces for the attacks
A group of five gunmen opened fire on West Darfur’s Hamidiya refugee camp on Saturday. The shooting that continued until Monday morning has led to some refugees fleeing the camps and the burning down of a few huts, coordinator of the Zalingei camps told Radio Dabanga.
The coordinator of the camps accused members of the Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM) and government-backed forces of being behind the firing. “They are targeting people in the camps who reject the Doha peace agreement,” he said. However, members within the LJM denied this allegation.
The coordinator also accused the insurgents of looting three women who were on their way to the camp. He raised suspicions of the perpetrators having links with the group that attacked the camp in 2007, which led to the death of seven people and injured more than 40.
The attacks in 2007 had targeted refugees who were against the Doha peace talks.
