Al Nur welcomes SPLM mediation, wants foreign intervention in Darfur
Abdel Wahid Al Nur, founder and Chairman of the Sudan Liberation Movement, said that after the new indictment of President Omar Al Bashir for crimes of genocide, the situation in Darfur should now require direct intervention by the United Nations Security Council and the major powers the United States, Britain and France to protect the people of Darfur. Abdel Wahid called for intervention in accordance with Chapter VII of the Charter of the United Nations. He said that these states are obligated to intervene to stop the genocide taking place in Darfur as happened in Kosovo and other countries.

On the other hand Abdel Wahid welcomed the mediation offer declared by the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, whose leader is the vice president of Sudan. Sudanese Vice President and SPLM Chairman Salva Kiir Mayardit was asked by UN-African mediator Djibril Bassolé to step in as a broker between the government and the rebel factions that refuse to join peace talks. Abdel Wahid welcomed the offer of Kiir to help solve the Darfur problem through facilitating communications and meetings with the Liberation and Justice Movement and Justice and Equality Movement. Abdul Wahid said the group welcomes this endeavor of the SPLM, which indicates that it is taking a fresh position on Darfur. However, the leader of the Sudan Liberation Movement noted that the official Sudanese news media quoted on Monday a government spokesman as saying that President Omar Al Bashir announced that the government does not accept the mediation of the SPLM. Abdel Wahid said that considering that SPLM is part of the government, this shows that Al Bashir and his National Congress Party are being selfish and do not desire to find a just and comprehensive solution in Darfur.
