Activists visit opposition leader detained in West Kordofan
A group of political and legal activists on Friday travelled from Khartoum to En Nahud in West Kordofan in support of the head of Sudanese Congress Party (SCP), Ibrahim El Sheikh, detained in En Nahud prison for about one month. Two detained party leaders have been transferred from En Nahud to El Fula, the capital of West Kordofan. The Chairman of the Darfur Bar Association, Mohamed Abdallah El Doma, told Radio Dabanga that a delegation of the National Advocacy Committee for Ibrahim El Sheikh, arrived on Friday afternoon at En Nahud. They intend to visit the SCP leader in prison. According to Mastour Ahmed, the party’s Political Secretary, El Sheikh is the only SCP leader still held in En Nahud. The security authorities of En Nahud have transferred the head of the SCP En Nahud branch, Ali Mahdi El Sanusi, and former SCP Secretary-General, Abdel Halim Adam Mohamed, from El Nahud to the prison of El Fula, the capital of West Kordofan. The two party members were detained on Saturday, 28 June, together with Samia Kir Abdallah, SCP Secretary-General, when security forces raided the party’s premises in En Nahud. On Tuesday, journalist Hassan Ishag, and six SCP members, among them Abdallah, were transferred from En Nahud to a prison in El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan. SCP head El Sheikh was taken by the security service from his home in En Nahud on 8 June. He was charged with undermining the Constitution, after he had publicly denounced the widespread attacks by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces on civilians in Darfur and Kordofan. El Jareeda correspondent Hassan Ishag was detained because he wrote an article on the reasons of El Sheikh’s arrest. National Umma Party leader and former Prime Minister El Sadig El Mahdi was detained on 17 May for the same reason. He was released on 15 June, “within the legal framework”, State Minister of Information Yasir Yousif said.
