Abducted peacekeeper released in South Darfur
Unamid peacekeeper Sgt. Awesu Soleiman, who was abducted in Nyala, South Darfur on 9 March, was freed in the city on Thursday after 54 days in captivity. The AU-UN Joint Special Representative for Darfur, Mohamed Ibn Chambas, expressed the Mission’s gratitude to the Government of Sudan, the Governor of South Darfur, and the Government of Nigeria for their valuable assistance in securing the safe release of Sgt. Soleiman. On 9 March, at about 5pm, the peacekeeper was abducted while driving a Unamid water tanker from the Dereige camp for the displaced to the Unamid Super Camp in Nyala.
