‘Abbala kill man’ after last week’s attacks in C. Darfur

Abbala militants allegedly armed by the government killed a man in Umm Shalaya, Central Darfur on Friday, according to reports. This is the same area that saw thousands being displaced last week following a three-day assault by Abbala that left three dead. According to eyewitnesses, Abbala militants had stolen 37 cows belonging to the citizen Yahiya Wad’jabaya, but that were under the watch of his son. Following the looting, Wad’jabaya and other herders tried chasing the Abbala and recover the cows but they were ambushed instead and the owner of the cattle was killed by the militants. Sources told Radio Dabanga about the continuous attacks they suffer by insurgents armed by the government.The situation is ongoing, they noted, despite commitments made by militia leaders and native administrators in front of the “representatives of West and Central Darfur” to end the hostilities.Members of the Arab Abbala and Beni Hussein tribes reportedly clashed on 5 January in North Darfur over control of the gold mines in Jebel ‘Amer.Since then, sources in West Darfur have been complaining about the “increasing” presence of militias.Last week, three people died and thousands were displaced after three days of attacks by Abbala militants in Umm Shalaya, Central Darfur.Related: Abbala attacks in C.
