‘50,000 displaced in Darfur returned home this year’: OCHA

Up to 223,000 people in Darfur have been displaced from their homes by conflict since January this year. 104,000 of these people have received some form of humanitarian assistance, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported in its latest humanitarian snapshot. Some 50,000 of the displaced people have returned home.

Access restrictions and continued insecurity have prevented OCHA and its partners from verifying up to 69,000 people who are reportedly also displaced by fighting, including in East Jebel Marra in Darfur. In 2015, humanitarian organisations aim to assist an estimated 5.4 million of the most vulnerable people in Sudan with their 2015 Sudan Humanitarian Response Plan.

In this response plan the humanitarian community wants to provide assistance to some 1.6 million of the most food-insecure non-displaced people in Sudan – most of them live in North Darfur. The plan also addresses 1.2 million of the most severely malnourished children aged under 5.

In government-controlled areas of South Kordofan an estimated 36,000 people have been displaced, of whom 13,000 have returned, OCHA further reported. In government-controlled areas of Blue Nile, an estimated 60,000 have been displaced since January.

 At the end of 2014, some 3.1 million people in Sudan were internally displaced; the majority in Darfur. A further 0.7 million people were refugees displaced from their country of origin or South Sudanese who are unable to move to South Sudan.
