40 women discuss Darfur problems at UN-hosted meeting
UN peacekeepers in Darfur yesterday sponsored a dialogue event for women in El Fasher, North Darfur. The event follows four earlier consultations held in Darfur during the month of May. More than 40 participants attended the event representing women’s groups, youth, internally displaced persons, nomads, the state government, and former rebel forces. The UN-African Union Peacekeeping Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) was represented by Yegerawork Angagaw, head of the mission’s Gender Advisory Unit. She said that the peacekeepers had tried to reach out to women affiliated with both the government and rebel groups. The two hour dialogue touched on topics including political representation, protection in conflict, and ending impunity for sexual violence, according to a statement issued by UNAMID. The statement said that the other peacekeeping mission in Sudan, UNMIS, will host a similar event on 10 June in Khartoum.
