3 arrested in S. Darfur university ‘for requesting colleague’s release’
The security services arrested three students of South Darfur’s Nyala University inside the campus after they requested the release of a colleague who is in detention for two months. A source told Radio Dabanga the students were arrested on Wednesday morning after they organized a debate calling for the release of Mohamed Tayfur, who is detained for two months in an “unknown location”. Fellow students said that following the debate, the security services stormed the Nyala University in large numbers and fired “great amounts” of tear gas to disperse the undergraduates.The three students currently in custody are Abdul Azim Hamdoun Abdullah (faculty of education), Mohamed Abdullah Dergi (faculty of technical engineering), and Ishaaq Issa, known as Newton, (faculty of technical engineering).Nyala university students are demanding the immediate release of their colleagues.See also: Security services arrest Darfur student prior to exams term (28 January 2013)
